Knocked Down a Notch

Last Friday, I lost my temper over the phone with a stranger. How did that happen? Let me take you back to the beginning of the week...

The previous Saturday evening, The Prophet was complaining about his cheek & neck being sore on the right side. His cheek was swollen, as well as his gland. Even without touching the gland, I could see how big it was. We gave him some Ibuprophen before bed & he was able to sleep.

The Prophet w/ his swollen cheek & gland.
We decided to give it a day before taking him to urgent care. We knew they would be extremely busy on Sunday & did not want to expose any of us to other illnesses. The Ibuprophen seemed to help w/ some of the pain, but the swelling remained.

Monday morning, Matt took The Prophet to urgent care. He called me to say the doctor thought it was an infection settled in his gland, BUT it could also be the Mumps. Sunday, they had seen three similar cases. They took some blood to test & told Matt it would be a couple of hours for the results. They also gave him a prescription for an antibiotic for the possible infection.

About ten minutes later, Matt called me back. It turned out the blood test would take two days, not two hours. They could call us Wednesday if he had the Mumps, but not call if he didn't. (Personally, I'd prefer a call either way!) In the meantime, The Prophet would have to stay away from others, just in case. No lunch out w/ Grandma & his cousin that afternoon. No dinner w/ the church choir & families Tuesday night.

Wednesday afternoon, we hadn't heard anything, so Matt called. (What if they didn't have our correct number?) After being transferred several times, he was told they wouldn't have the results until that night or the next morning. OK - now The Prophet would have to miss band on Thursday (the 1st practice since before Christmas & the 1st of four before their band concert).

Matt called back Thursday afternoon. After the multiple transfers, he spoke to a nurse (?) who said the results were sent to our family doctor. She did give Matt a reading from Sam's bloodwork, but couldn't explain what it meant. Our doctor would have to go over it w/ us & she mentioned that he might want a 2nd round of blood tests.

I called our doctor's office & left a message. They called back to say they hadn't received anything yet.

By four Friday afternoon, we still didn't know anything. I left a message at our doctor's office again. They returned my call to say they'd only received notice that The Prophet had been to urgent care...no test results.

So, calling back to urgent care...I called the lab & the girl I spoke to was not permitted to give me any information. She gave me the number for Medical Records, which I promptly called. By now, it was 4:31pm. Their recording said they closed at 4:30pm! It also gave another number to call if it was after hours.

By this point, I was getting very frustrated! I just wanted to know if my son had the Mumps or not!

I called the next number & reached Medical Records at the hospital affiliated w/ the urgent care. I explained the situation, only to be told that "Yes" she had the results, but "No" she wasn't permitted to give them to me.

WHAT?!?! I'm his mother!

Per HIPPA laws she can't tell me by phone. I'd have to pick them up. OK - it's 4:40 on a Friday afternoon! I got very upset. I raised my voice. My son had been stuck at home for the past week, missing some fun activities even though he felt fine. He was bored to death. I supposed I would have to wait until Monday to pick the results up because they'd were about to close?

Thankfully, no! She was there through the evening & even though their window was already closed for the weekend, she would make sure I could get the results. I apologized for getting upset. She said she's a mother, too, & understood.

I hopped in the car & was at the hospital in about 20 minutes. I descended to the basement & rang the bell at the Medical Records department. She came out, gave me a release form to sign, checked my driver's license, & gave me the results. NO MUMPS!

I apologized again for going all psycho on the phone. She hugged me & forgave me.

I'm not usually so quick to lose (& loose) my temper. As a receptionist, I know what it's like to be on the receiving end of said adult tantrums. So, I normally try to see beyond the situation, realized their being upset is probably something that's been building, & I'm the "lucky" one when they finally snap!

Looking back over the past week, I see how it all built for me & the poor Medical Records lady was the "lucky" one! I have to give her credit...she was extremely calm & kind in dealing w/ me, the psychotic Momma Bear! And I think that's part of why I got so upset...I WAS a Momma Bear looking out for her cub. (Even though that "cub" is now two inches taller than his Momma, he'll always be my baby!)

Ready for the twist in all of this? You've gotta love those moment when God knocks you down a notch or two!

Saturday morning, just after I arrived at work & got clocked in, I was confronted by a resident's daughter. She wanted to know who was in charge. I told her that I'd just gotten there, but could find out. I asked if she needed who was in charge of in nurses or someone else. She waved her arm & said she wanted whoever was over the whole place. She was very upset & I said I would find out once I got back to the front office.

About 1/2 an hours later, the situation was fine. She came up to apologize & explained how it had built for her. She said her mom was on the brink of death & in the hospital just over a week ago, then to get a call from her mom this morning about how someone spoke or did something was enough to set her off.

I told her I understood & about what happened to me the previous day when I lost my temper. We want the best for our children & our parents. When their needs are not being met or we're not getting the answers we are looking for we need to speak up. Unfortunately, we often end up speaking up louder & harsher than we intend.

Happy 12th Birthday to My Firstborn

Today, my "baby", The Prophet turned 12. Is it really possible that he's going to be a teen in just one year? I just can't believe it! He already stands up to my nose...oops, I just checked, he stands up to my forehead! It won't be much longer until he's taller than me.

He has grown into such a sweet, kind young man & we are very proud of him. Sure, he has moments where we wonder what on earth he was thinking...don't all parents? Yet, through it all, he's proven time & again that he can really be dependable, helpful, & loving.

The Prophet
T - Talented
H - Helpful
E - Enthusiastic

P - Playful
R - Real
O - Ornery
P - Prayful
H - Healthy
E - Enjoyable
T - True

This link will take you to his Birth Story from two years ago.

So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our dear Lego-loving, faith-filled, wise son! We love you so much & are so proud of you. I thank God daily for entrusting the care of your soul to us.

Our Budding Musician

The Prophet has joined a homeschool band. He really wanted to play saxophone, but it's not w/in our budget this year. His director suggested starting out on clarinet, since it will be an easy switch later on. We already had my sister's clarinet, so that worked out perfectly for us.

I am very pleased w/ this band & have seen so much growth in The Prophet since he began just a few short month's ago.

His assignment for tomorrow's class is to compose & play a song of his own. So without further ado, I present to you, The Prophet playing "The Sorrowful March" written by himself!

Part Two of "On Turning the Big 4-0"

I forgot to add this "dear" comment from The Prophet to yesterday's post.

Occasionally, I will view online photos of stars celebrating their birthdays. Yesterday, William Shatner turned 81 & Andrew Lloyd Webber turned 64. When I looked at their photos, Andrew looked a lot older than William (I'm sure he's had much work done).

The older boys were looking at the photos w/ me & when I made that comment, The Prophet looked at William's photo & said, "He looks your age, Mom!" Gee, thanks Son!

Small Successes

FaithButton

Danielle Bean says, "It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So on Thursday of each week, we do exactly that."

1) I've relinquished control of the kitchen the last couple days & let The Prophet cook. He's done quite well for a 10 yo boy & is enjoying the planning & creativity that can go along w/ cooking.

2) Along the lines of #1, I did not get angry when he accidentally burned our counter when he placed a hot pot on it. We all make mistakes & that is the way we learn.

3) I don't know if this is my success so much as the Holy Spirit's...I've been getting a LOT out of my spiritual reading the Lenten season. Between Jeff Cavin's Great Adventure 8-Week Bible Study, The Word Among Us & Not By Bread Alone: Daily Reflections for Lent by Robert F. Morneau (both for the daily readings), & The Life-Giving Power of the Cross by Jeanne Kun (a Word Among Us book my Small Church Community is using...a GREAT book, BTW), I can really feel my faith deepening. Plus, I'm finding a lot of parallels between the four books at times.

How have things been for you lately?

A Thankful Woman's Book of Blessings

My dear blogging friend, Judy over at A Thankful Woman's Book of Blessings, hosts this meme every Wednesday. Simply list five things (or a prayer or any thoughts) for which you are truly thankful this week. Voicing my thanks helps put my life in perspective & realize that, no matter how bad things might be, there is still MUCH good surrounding me.

1) I'm thankful that we're starting to see some positive results from The Archangel's new ADHD medicine. There's not a big change & we still have a ways to go, but after negative results from previous meds, this is somewhat encouraging.

2) I'm thankful for the wonderful homilies by our pastor & deacons. On Sunday, I was brought to tears by our pastor's words & last night, at the Holy Day Vigil Mass, he brought laughter.

3) Following up on #2, I'm thankful that The Prophet is learning from the homilies. I know it's tough for him to focus sometimes, so it's AWESOME when he can tell us what he's learned.

4) I'm thankful for the strong faith I see developing in The Princess. Whenever we ask her what she'd like for Christmas, she says she wants a Catholic room...books, statues, pictures, rosaries, etc. Every couple of days, she'll disappear up in her room for a while, then come downstairs w/ toys & books that she wants to give away...all in an effort to make room for her Catholic items.

5) This final one I type w/ a heavy heart...last night, my best friend's mom (who was like a second mother to me) passed away. My thanks in this sad time is that she is no longer suffering. I'm also thankful for having her in my life. She was truly a wonderful woman & will be greatly missed.

The Prophet's Birth Story & 10th Birthday Photos

Note: I wanted to post his hospital photo here, but I'm having trouble w/ our scanner.

On April 10, 2000, I took a home pregnancy test & was absolutely delighted that it was positive! We hadn’t been trying to get pregnant for long & we were quite (pleasantly) surprised by how quickly it happened. The pregnancy progressed very well & I had no morning sickness, other than a few nauseous moments here & there (sorry if I’m rubbing that in for any of you!) We decided to wait instead of finding out the sex before birth.
I continued to feel great until a few weeks before my due date of December 10. On Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I went for my weekly check-up. I’d been swelling quite a bit & they found that my protein levels were higher than they should be. So, the next day, I had to do an all day urine test then take it to the hospital Thanksgiving morning to be tested. Even w/ the paperwork, apparently they didn’t know what to do w/ it & it sat on the counter until Friday morning. I called my doctor’s office & they got back to me later in the afternoon to say that I had pre-eclampsia & to go directly to the hospital for induction…do not pass go, do not collect $200, & absolutely, DO NOT finish that Italian chicken sub you’d started eating!!!
I called Casinodad at work & told him to get home because we had to go to the hospital. Once there, they got me all wired up…monitor for the eventual contractions, baby’s heartbeat monitor, Foley catheter because I hadn’t dilated at all yet, & an IV loaded w/ stuff! Once I was dilated to 3cm, they started the Pitocin in the IV. Now if you’ve never had Pitocin before, count yourself lucky! It’s a drug to help start contractions. It’s not so bad at first, but they gradually increase the amount & by the time it’s at full strength, those contractions are kicked into overdrive, coming practically on top of each other. I had fully intended to go natural & avoid an epidural. (WHAT? You’re going to put a needle where?) After trying several other drugs to ease the pain, I caved & practically begged for the epidural! AAAAHHHHHH! What relief!

Because of my increased protein levels & high blood pressure, there was a slight danger of seizures, so they added Magnesium Sulfate to my IV. I am a person who likes to relax by reading & was looking forward to enjoying a book between contractions. However, the Magnesium Sulfate dilated my eyes, making reading blurry & impossible. Even watching TV was tough.
Once I got the epidural, things seemed to progress much quicker. I couldn’t feel any of the contractions & once it was time to push, they had to tell me when to do it! I only had to push for an hour & at 9:03pm on Saturday, November 25, 2000, The Prophet was born.
Casinodad was there to catch him when he came out & my dad was the one to cut the cord. Now, I know many of you are probably wondering how on earth I could have my father in the delivery room w/ me. I asked him for several reasons & we were both comfortable w/ it. When my sister & I were born, Dad was not allowed in the delivery room, so he missed out on that experience. Then, when my sister had her first child, my mom was there w/ her. So, I wanted to see if my dad wanted to be there for my first child. (Anyway…when a woman gives birth, she has to give up any sense of modesty, doesn’t she?) I really think it helped The Prophet bond w/ my dad & to this day, they still have a close relationship.
So there you have it…The Prophet’s birth story. I can’t believe it’s been ten years since that day. He has grown into an amazing young man who loves his siblings, his faith, anything Star Wars, Legos, & spending time w/ his friends & cousins.
Happy Birthday Dear Son! We love you & are so proud of you.

A Thankful Woman's Book of Blessings

Judy over at A Thankful Woman's Book of Blessings, hosts this meme every Wednesday. Simply list five things (or a prayer or any thoughts) for which you are truly thankful this week. Voicing my thanks helps put my life in perspective & realize that, no matter how bad things might be, there is still MUCH good surrounding me.

1) I'm SO thankful to have our computer back! It caught a virus last week & has been in the shop since last week. I took it as God's answer to my prayer...to not spend so much time on the computer. He really took me seriously!

2) I'm thankful that I finally went to the doctor for my lower back. It's been bothering me for at least a year & has been getting worse the past couple months. I tried not going for so long to avoid co-pays, prescriptions, toughing it out, etc. but just couldn't wait any longer. Thankfully the X-ray showed nothing. I was given a two week prescription & I start physical therapy this morning.

3) I'm thankful for The Prophet's motivated self yesterday! He was done w/ the majority of his school work by 8:30am. We usually don't even start until 9am!

4) I'm thankful that I was blessed in knowing a very sweet lady at the nursing home where I work on Saturdays. She was 97 years old, blind, going deaf, & I really enjoyed talking to her. She passed away a week & a half ago and while it hit me hard, I celebrate that she is now w/ God in Heaven.

5) I'm thankful that The Princess is really enjoying the Little Flower's Girls Club. They only meet once a month, but she is so motivated to go through her tasks here at home to earn her badges. She's even going to be St. Therese of Lisieux for Halloween & is VERY excited about it! I love that she has such a strong love of our faith!

The Princess Received Her Rose from St. Therese of Liseux

Last Friday was the Feast of St. Therese of Liseux. For school, we had a lesson about her including reading about her life & a scrapbook-type craft. (By the end of the school year, each of the munchkins will have their own handmade saint book.) We did our lesson on Thursday because we had plans to go to Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton w/ my parents, my sister, & her family on Friday.

On Friday, we decided to meet at our house & head to Dayton in two vans. My parents arrived first...bringing along a few things (as parents like to do!) My mom handed The Princess a small lap quilt that belonged to my great aunt when she was in a nursing home. After she died, my mom kept it then thought The Princess might like it. Because I was busy getting last minute things together, I didn't really take more than a glance at the quilt.

When we got home, she brought the quilt over to me so that I could see it. The first thing I noticed was the large pink rose in one of the squares. There were other flowers on the quilt, but it was the only square of its kind. Immediately I reminded her of what St. Therese said about sending a shower of roses from Heaven. She was absolutely thrilled! I told her that if she wanted, she could have St. Therese be her patron saint & she said, "YES!" w/ a big grin on her face. She slept under that quilt all that night.

And BTW - my great aunt's name? ROSE. She'd been ill as a child & her mind never grew beyond that of a young child. We always called her Rosie & she was an absolute sweetheart. We have a picture from the funeral home of The Prophet (about age 3) kneeling in front of her casket, with his eyes closed in prayer. The Archangel (about 18 months) is standing on the kneeler, next to The Prophet.

Day Twenty-Two - Someone You Would Give Up Your Life For Without Question

This is a no-brainer for me...or is it? Obviously, the first people to come to mind are Casinodad & the munchkins. They mean the world to me. I remember one of my first time mother worries, when The Prophet was a baby. I was still working part-time at AAA. On my drive to work one morning, I crossed over a railroad track. Out of nowhere, I started worrying about what would happen if the car got stuck on the track & a train was coming. Even scarier, I wondered what would happen if I couldn't get his car seat buckle unlatched in time. Would I save myself & get out of the car or would I stay there w/ my baby? I knew deep down that there was no way I'd be able to live w/ myself if I got out of the way. I would sacrifice my life w/ my baby.

As I've been thinking about this topic, I'm reminded of a conversation in the cafeteria during my college years. A group of us were sitting around the table for one of our meals & the topic of abortion came up. One of my friends was asking whether or not we'd have an abortion in various scenarios. This was before I had fully realized the ramifications & horrific details of an abortion, but I still knew that it was wrong. So, my answer for each one was that I definitely wouldn't have one. He asked about a pregnancy after being raped. Would I still have the baby then? Immediately I said yes. Even if I didn't want to keep the baby, I would give him/her up for adoption. Why should that child be punished for something I had no control over? The final scenario was if it came down to being my life or the baby's, would I abort to save myself. I said, "No, not even then. I've lived my life. Why should I deny the baby a life just to save mine?" Years later, I read about St. Gianna Beretta Molla & immediately felt a kinship w/ her. What a beautiful story of a mother's sacrifice!

1) I'm thankful for the time spent w/ The Saint in the evenings, putting him to bed. He is now out of the Pack & Play, sleeping in The Princess' bed for now w/ her & doing quite well (& he's sleeping most of the night now...a BIG accomplishment!) I will sit in the rocker, praying the Rosary, while he goes back & forth between the bed & me.

2) I'm thankful for the kindness of the greeter at Walmart last evening. While he was getting the sticker printed for my return, he asked about my day & also gave me a great thought that someone passed on to him..."Every day is a good one, some are just better than others!" What a positive thought!

3) I'm thankful The Princess has been so helpful around the house lately. Each day she practically begs to wash dishes for me & for a five year old, she does a great job! (It probably doesn't hurt that we keep a credited account for her...she's saving up for a couple of the miniature American Girl dolls.)

4) I'm thankful for The Archangel's thirst for knowledge. At the library yesterday, he went straight to the science section & picked out books on all but 2 planets & a big pictorial book on weather. As he was reading a couple of the planet books, he was so excited to share some of the things he learned w/ me.

5) I'm thankful for The Prophet's growth & some of the great conversations we have together.

6) And a bonus for this week...I'm so thankful that on this day, two years ago, I gave birth to a wonderful blessing. The Saint has brought so much love & joy into our lives, drawing our family even closer together.

(Mostly) Wordless Wednesday - The Munchkins in Spring

Thankfully, no plants were harmed in the taking of this photo!

I really wish The Princess liked to have her picture taken!

The Archangel taught himself to ride his bike last fall.

The sidewalk was getting a little overgrown, so The Saint decided to tackle it!

Voicing my thanks helps put my life in perspective & realize that, no matter how bad things might be, there is still MUCH good surrounding me.

Dear Heavenly Father, I am full of thanks for the following things:

1) Thank you for a little extra sleep this morning. The Prophet helped by getting The Saint up & giving him some breakfast. The only thing he didn't do for me was start my coffee!

2) Thank you for the rain we've had the past couple days. Even though it is VERY dreary & the munchkins have major cabin fever, it is much needed. And there are so many beautiful shades of green outside.

3) Thank you for the homeschool conference coming up this weekend. I've been wanting to go for several years & everything just fell into place for us this year. Casinodad is going w/ me, while my mom comes Friday afternoon to stay overnight & his mom will watch the munchkins on Saturday.

4) Thank you the tutor who's been coming a couple times a week to help The Prophet. There were a few areas in Math & Language Skills where we were having some trouble, so it has helped to have someone else present them in a different way.

5) Thank you that we only have another week & a half left of school. It's been a long year for us & we'd gotten quite a bit behind, so we've been working hard the last couple months to catch up. All of us are anxiously awaiting the upcoming summer break!

A Thankful Woman's Book of Blessings (2nd Post Today)

Judy over at A Thankful Woman's Book of Blessings, hosts this meme every Wednesday. Simply list five things (or a prayer or any thoughts) for which you are truly thankful this week. Voicing my thanks helps put my life in perspective & realize that, no matter how bad things might be, there is still MUCH good surrounding me.

1) Thank you, God, that Casinodad's best friend has made a miraculous recovery! He came home from the hospital on Monday.

2) Thank you, God, that our neighbor was able to install a new sliding glass door for us. He still needs to do a little work on the inside, but the outside is done AND we can now open the door to enjoy the fresh air.

3) Thank you, God, for a nice Mothers' Day visit to my in-laws. My SIL made dinner for all of us & the munchkins got to enjoy a lot of outdoor time at Grandma's

4) Thank you, God, that The Prophet is now old enough to mow the law & help us out. He does a great job, too!

UPDATED TO EDIT: The Prophet mows the LAWN...NOT the LAW!

5) Thank you, God, that we are winding down the school year. We have about 2 1/2 weeks left. I'm not sure who's more excited...them or me!

Kids Say the Darndest Things

Join Us for Kids say the Darndest things

Oops! I goofed slightly last week. I should have included The Prophet for the Hail Mary comment, too. I forgot that he also said "Play with us sinners." Maybe it was something in the way we were teaching the boys...

Here's another from The Prophet:
When he was five years old, he was sitting at the table w/ a baked potato. He took his fork & put it into one end of the potato, held it up, & said, "Look, it's a punch lifter." After a few seconds, I realized that he meant it was a punch "ladle."

1) Thank you, Lord, for opening my eyes & ears to Your Word each morning. I've struggled for a long time, trying to hear You. While I'm not anywhere near 100%, the more I read the more I seem to find You in the day to day things.

2) Thank you, Lord, for The Prophet learning to use my coffee maker. He makes a great pot of coffee for me to enjoy!

3) Thank you, Lord, for the sunshine finally appearing (even though it's raining today). It's been a long, snowy winter & I am ready for Spring.

4) Thank you, Lord, for a quick physical this morning. (I pray my tests come back w/ good results.) The nurse came out to get me while I was still at the window paying my co-pay. Although, I was looking forward to getting a little personal reading time in! (Why is it that we wait a LONG time for the munchkins appointments, but when it's just me, I get right in?!?)

5) Thank you, Lord, for reconnecting w/ a long, lost friend through Facebook. She moved suddenly in 3rd grade & I never knew what happened to her. She found me & we've been corresponding lately.

More for This Mother's Pride

Yesterday was truly a blessed day for our family. The Prophet was an altar server for the first time. A couple years ago, he helped my dad (a deacon at his parish) with the Stations of the Cross because Dad wasn't able to find any servers for that night. The Prophet really liked helping & couldn't wait until he could be a full-fledged server. We attended that parish at the time & there, students have to be in the fifth grade before they're able to serve. At our new parish, they can start in the second half of their third grade year. The Prophet was very excited to start. There hasn't been an official training session for new servers yet, so we just showed up early for our parish's deacon to run through the duties with him.

He did so well. I could tell he was a little nervous, but the other two servers were very supportive & helped him along. My parents & Casinodad's parents were there to support him, too. I had tears in my eyes when I saw him processing in, carrying one of the candles. He looked so grown up & pious. I had tears in my eyes several other times, too. I asked my dad if it was normal for a mother to cry when her son serves the first time & he (ever the jokester) said only if he messes up! We wanted to get a picture of him after Mass in his server robe w/ Monsignor & our deacon, but he de-robed before we had a chance.

On another note of pride in my children...the other three were very well-behaved in Mass yesterday, especially The Saint. This was the first Sunday since he was an infant, that we've been able to stay in the church through the whole Mass. Now, all of our munchkins are usually pretty good during Mass, but yesterday was the best they've been in a long time. I think they understood how special the occasion of their brother's first serving was (plus the fact that their grandparents were there!)

Future Leaders

Well, the munchkins have been full of interesting conversations lately. Take today, for instance...

The Princess: "Hey guys! I know what you can do. When you're adults, you can both be presidents. (The Saint) can be the king of the presidents."

The Prophet: "If I were president, I'd erase the economy."

The Archangel: "If I were president, I'd erase school."

The Prophet: "No one would vote for you because Moms & Dads want kids to be in school."

Almost Wordless Wednesday - The Prophet Got Braces & a Palatal Expander

Week One: Spacers on the Back Teeth

Week Two: Brackets & Blue Glue (to control his overbite)

Week Three: Wires & Palatal Expander
