On the Level w/ HandyGramps - A Love Story Like No Other

The following was written by HandyGramps in October & posted in their church's monthly newsletter for the month of November. With his permission, I am sharing it here.

A Love Story Like None Other

One day last month, September 2013, HelpfulGrammy and I lost a grandchild.  Our daughter, Maria, miscarried at 6½ weeks.  As sad as that was, there came to be an element of joy in what happened, a joy that can only come from the strength of true faith.  Let me explain.

A few days after it was discovered that the baby had died in utero, Maria passed what looked to be some kind of tissue.  Realizing that it could be the baby, she carefully preserved it in a brine solution and took it to her doctor.  The doctor confirmed that it was, indeed, the baby.  Maria knew that because it was a baby, a proper disposition of the remains was needed: the baby would be buried with all the sacredness and dignity of a Catholic burial.  That evening, the whole family – Maria, Matt, children The Prophet, The Archangel, The Princess, & The Saint – talked over what had happened.  Together, they decided that if the baby was to be buried, a name was in order.  After some discussion they all decided on Francis Mary – Francis in case it was a boy, Mary if it was a girl.  (Now, if you think about it, that’s not all that odd.  Many nuns have taken names such as Margaret Joseph, and monks have taken the likes of Bernard Mary.)

Maria located an organization called Back In His Arms Again (www.backinhisarmsagain.com) that dealt with babies that do not make it full term.  With their help, she arranged for a burial in Resurrection Cemetery near Lewis Center, north of Columbus.  A new plot had just been designed for babies just like Francis Mary.  It’s still being developed and has not yet been consecrated by Bishop Campbell.  Maria asked me if I would do a memorial service at the cemetery, and of course, I agreed.  It was decided that Friday, October 4, would be the day.

After we decided on readings and the form of the service, I began to think about what words I would say.  I’ve done a lot of funerals over the years, and I either know the person from the parish or I usually have a chance to meet with the family if I don’t know them.  That helps determine what I would say in a homily.  But, what could I say about an unborn child, especially my own grandchild?  For some reason, I decided to wear a red shirt with a red and black tie with crosses on it.  As I was putting them on, the Holy Spirit smacked me upside the head (as the Spirit often does).  Suddenly, I knew what I would say.

Life has a purpose, but what purpose is there to a life so quickly ended?  What purpose could there possibly be for Francis Mary, whose life never came to full term?  The color red gave me my answer.  It is the fire of true Christian love.
You see, Francis Mary was loved with a love that was anticipated even before conception because Maria and Matt had wanted another baby.  There are countless millions of babies just like Francis Mary, many whose lives ended in the womb through abortion.  Those babies never knew love in this world.  Yes, they are certainly loved by God, and that is certainly more than sufficient.  But they never knew the love of mothers and fathers who wanted them.  They were simply disposed of.  That, I believe, defined Francis Mary’s purpose in life.

Like them, Francis Mary’s life ended in the womb; so, in that respect, they would be able to identify with Francis Mary.  The way I see it, thanks to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, Francis Mary was conceived, and then taken to Heaven, in order to let them know that they are indeed loved in this world as well as in Heaven.   The very love that created Francis Mary, the love between Maria and Matt, the love of their four children, is the love that Francis Mary was created for, a special love to take to all those millions who never knew love here on Earth.  Thanks to Francis Mary, they would know that there are countless people on Earth who truly love them.

And, you know, the story does not end there.  As Maria and Matt said their morning prayer the day of the memorial service, Maria realized that October 4 was the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.  So maybe, just maybe, Francis Mary is a boy.

God works in mysterious ways.

Small Successes

FaithButton

This has been great for me! I'm trying to look at my days in a more positive light & am finding many things to put in this weekly post.

1) I made homemade baby food for The Saint. Why did it take me until the 4th child to discover how easy this is? He loved the applesauce & the pears. Next up - bananas!

2) Continuing w/ the spring cleaning, I did The Princess's room & it only took Mon. & Tues. to do it. Her bed frame & headboard have been in the basement for a while. So, in clearing out the basement last week & wanting to make her room look a bit more like a bedroom, I put her bed together Tues. She loves it & couldn't wait to show Daddy when he got home from work.

3) I went grocery shopping at Aldi yesterday. Not a success alone, but it was a big trip & I did it w/ all four munchkins about 1/2 an hour before lunch (not very smart, right!) Anyway, they were really good this time around. I'm sure the bribe of buying Lunchables for them didn't hurt matters any!

4) Yes, I know it's only supposed to be three, but I thought of another anyway - On Friday, the first really nice day in quite a while, I did not freak out when The Archangel fell & cut his chin on his scooter. We ended up at Urgent Care & just enough of a gash to need two stitches. It took two nurses & me to hold him down for the numbing shot. Why did it have to be the most sensitive of our munchkins?!?

What are your successes? Share them & see others at http://www.faithandfamilylive.com/. Have a blessed week full of many Small Successes!

This is How I Feel About Taxes!

Casinodad decided to let me sleep in last Saturday. While I was sleeping & the munchkins were occupied w/ their Legos & stuff, CD decided to do our taxes. This is what I found when I came downstairs.

The Saint is Now Six Months Old

Wow! I can't believe six months have gone by already! He's been such a joy in our house & the other munchkins are still thrilled to have him. The Archangel repeatedly tells us how nice it is that God gave us a baby. Every morning, when I bring him downstairs, all three of them come running to see him & gush over him, especially The Princess. She's such a little mother to him. The Prophet enjoys carrying him around. This has been a tremendous help to me, so that I can prepare meals or get something done.

Six months must be the magic age for him. We started him on rice cereal, his first tooth just broke the surface yesterday, & he's rolled over from his tummy to his back. Pretty soon he'll be crawling & we won't be able to keep up w/him!

He loved his cereal. For quite a while now, he's watched us like a hawk when we eat, sitting on our laps & observing as our utensils went from plate to mouth. For his first bite of cereal, he grabbed my hand & pulled it right to his mouth. Smart little guy, don't you think?

Oh, & he's reading, too! Check out the intense look on his face as he relaxes on the floor w/ a good book!

Happy "Half" Birthday, Little Man!

The Saint's Baptism

UPDATED 9/18 to add family photo w/ my Dad (I got his permission)

A few weeks ago, my dad baptized The Saint during our 9am Mass. He has baptized all of our munchkins & as with the others, we chose full emersion. The baptism went very well, a beautiful ceremony to bring our little man into the Catholic Church. The picture below was taken right after he was baptized & was presented w/ the baptismal cloth. I have more photos which show his emersion, but there are other people in the photos & I don't think it's right to post their pictures on my blog w/out their permission.

The Godparents we chose for The Saint are a very faith-filled couple. We've known their family for years. He used to work w/ my dad & she joined the Catholic Church a few years ago. When we asked them to be his Godparents, she teared up. Both of them were honored to be chosen.

One Month's Difference

My sister had her fifth boy on Aug. 27. He weighed in at 9 lbs. 5 oz, just 4 oz. less than The Saint weighed at his four week checkup! We got to see him when he was just a few days old & he is darling. She's calling him Baby Moon for now on her blog, http://www.celestialacademy.blogspot.com/. I'm sure that will change once he gets older & develops his own likes.

For those of you who know my sister, you know that she & I are definitely different when it comes to our sizes. I'm a lot bigger than she is & when I am pregnant, I am huge compared to her. We've both been pregnant at the same time for our past two pregnancies.

At the beginning of June of this year, I had about two months to go & she had about 2 1/2 months go go. We were at their house for my nephew's birthday party & one of their neighbors commented on my pregnancy, asking if I was due soon. He was shocked to hear that I still had two months to go. My sister only looked about five months along while I looked like a barge compared to her. So, it always comes as a shock to me that she gives birth to larger babies. I guess part of that is due to my high blood pressure & having them 2-3 weeks early while she goes very close to her due dates. And the fact that she only gains in her tummy, while I gain everywhere!

Anyway, here is a picture I took of the new cousins. Baby Moon (on the left) is four days old & The Saint is six weeks. Can you tell that they're just over one month apart? Nope, I can't either!

Congratulations Sis, on your fifth boy! He's very precious & a welcome addition to our ever-growing family!

He's Growing Fast!

What a difference one month can make. I took The Saint for his one month check-up on Mon. & he's doing great. He was 7 lbs 9 oz at birth & is now 9 lbs 8 oz. He's in the 49th percentile for his weight.

Here he is at one day old...

Now here he is today...

(Check out those cheeks & chubby arms w/ rubber-band wrists!)

Breastmilk & Garlic Don't Mix

I went to change The Saint's diaper last night & got a whiff of something other than what he had deposited for me. Apparantly the fresh garlic I used in last night's dinner went straight to my milk supply, giving his diaper a nice garlic scent. Then, this morning, The Archangel came up to kiss The Saint & smelled his hand. "Yuck, his hand smells like garlic!" he said. I guess the garlic got into his skin too! He's still nursing well, so it either doesn't change the taste or he doesn't mind it.

Two Weeks Old!

The Saint is two weeks old as of yesterday & he's doing great! He does have a bit of jaundice but not bad enough to warrant the use of a photo therapy blanket. We had to go for some bloodwork several times last week to make sure his bilirubin levels were going down - which they are. His eyes are still a bit yellow, but that's always the last to return to normal. He's eating & getting rid of his waste very well, so our doctor wasn't too concerned. At his appointment yesterday, he weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. So, he's gained back his birth weight & added a few ounces. I can definitely see that he's filling out already. Those adorable chubby cheeks are getting even chubbier by the day!

We still can't figure out for sure who he looks like. With his eyes closed, he looks like The Archangel & when they're open, he looks like The Prophet. I guess we should just say that he looks like The Saint!

When we first got home from the hospital a couple weeks ago, The Archangel asked how long we were going to keep the new baby. I told him that he'd live w/ us until he grew up, went to college, got married & had a family of his own. The Archangel was very pleased to hear that we were keeping The Saint. All of the munchkins are still completely in love w/ their new baby brother. The Archangel keeps saying, "Mommy, it's great to have a baby in the house, isn't it?" All of them keep saying how cute he is & love to give him hugs & kisses.

Our family is anxiously awaiting another birth in about three weeks. My sister is expecting her fifth child & all the kids are excited to meet their new cousin. Not only is this her fifth child, it is her fifth boy - no girls for her. So, The Princess is the only girl for my parents. She's definitely learned to be tough, sticking up for herself when bothered by her brothers & cousins. You can check out her blog to see pictures of her boys holding The Saint when they came to visit at the hospital: www.celestialacademy.blogspot.com

I'll update w/ more pictures soon. I took a great one the other day of all four munchkins together. I just haven't uploaded the new photos to the computer yet.

"The Saint" Has Arrived!

Meet "The Saint"! He was born on Mon. July 21, weighing in at 7 lbs. 9 oz. & measuring 20 inches long. If we had gone the full 40 weeks instead of being induced three weeks early, he probably would have been close to 9 lbs!
You can't see it from this photo, but he has a full head of dark, almost black hair & dark blue eyes. He has the chubbiest cheeks - the first comment from our doctor was about those cheeks! His head is well rounded, no cone shape.

Labor & delivery went well. We were able to come home Tues. night. He's a very content baby, only crying when hungry or being changed.

The munchkins are really in love w/ their baby brother & can't get enough of him. They keep saying how cute he is, wanting to hug & kiss him constantly. They've done very well holding him & have been very gentle. Tuesday night, he woke The Princess up w/ his crying. I went to check on her, reassuring her that he was okay & that should could go back to sleep. She said, "But I can't hear my sleep!" I turned on her music & closed her door, then she fell right back to sleep.
I'll post more pictures soon. I just wanted to introduce you to the new member of our family.
Peace, Munchesmom

More of a Bargain

Went to the other consignment shop today & what a great trip it was! First of all, we dropped off our items. It was going to be about two hours so we ran a few errands. When we got back, I decided to look around the store first for the items I wanted to purchase. After about 45 minutes & some excellent behavior on the munchkins' parts, I took them up front. They offered $46.50 for the items they wanted. Wow! That was much more than I expected. The 14 items I wanted to purchase (2 pairs of shorts for The Princess, 2 T-shirts for The Archangel, 2 pairs of shorts & a T-shirt for The Prophet, & 7 outfist for Baby #4, including a Christmas outfit for him) came to $34 - I got money back!!! On the way out, the munchkins saw a video that we used to get at the library. It is no longer there so I told them I'd buy it for them, since they were so good (& it was only $2).

I think it helped that one of our items was a Classic Winnie the Pooh crib bedding set. The other shop didn't take bedding unless it was a specific brand. Why, you're asking, did we sell a crib bedding set when we have another baby on the way? Well, this time around, we don't have the space to set up the full size crib. We have decided that Baby #4 will use a travel size crib that my parents have. It will fit perfectly in the second closet we have in our bedroom. Yes, we're putting him in a closet, but we're taking the doors off & I will be putting up wall decorations for him. Once he's a bit older, we'll get bunk beds for the two older boys & move the baby to their room or move all the boys to the master bedroom & we'd take the next largest room. We put a lot of thought into this & really feel this is the best we can do at this time. With the housing market the way it is, there's no way we'd be able to sell the house at the moment.

Peace, munchesmom

What a Bargain!!

After we had the Princess we thought we were done. In an effort to reduce clutter & make some money, we sold or gave away most of the baby clothes we'd had, keeping only the really adorable ones we couldn't part with. Now that we are about to welcome baby #4 into our household, we're realizing that he will need something to wear. I went through a bunch of the Princess's outgrown clothes, filled up a kitchen size trash bag & took them to a local children's consignment shop. They will pay on the spot for the items or give you a bit more in store credit. I opted for the store credit. They only took a handful of the items & offered me $12.50 in store credit. For what they took I thought it was a fair deal. After the store credit & a $5 coupon I had, I only had to pay 20 cents for the clothes I picked out. Not bad for six baby outfits, two of them still in their original packaging!

Next stop will be to take the rest of the items to another consignment shop & do the same. It's in a different area of town & is a different store chain, so hopefully they'll take some also. I don't (& didn't) expect to sell all of the items we had, but any little bit helps!

Less than three months to go before my due date & I feel huge already. This pregnancy has definitely been the toughest on my old body - taking into consideration the fact that I already have three munchkins under the age of seven, I'm working two days a week, & I am a bit older than the last pregnancies. I have big spider & varicose veins on my right leg. They don't hurt unless I'm on my feet for too long. Also, I don't know if my stretchmarks can stretch any further. I have one that is a bit sore. Is it possible to have stretchmarks on your strechmarks?!?!?

Casinodad has been a great help. He's been getting things for me when I need them, making sure I rest as much as possible, & just been great at taking care of me. He's such a wonderful man & I am truly blessed to have him in my life!

A Rose Among Thorns!

Well, I am halfway through this pregnancy. Actually, if my blood pressure goes up in the last month like it did w/ the other munchkins, I'd say that I'm over halfway there. I had to be induced all three pregnancies due to pregnancy induced hypertension. The boys were two weeks early & The Princess was three weeks early. It was kind of nice though. I didn't have to wait around & wonder if I was truly in labor or not!

Had an ultrasound on Monday. We're having another boy! So, as my doctor said, The Princess will be a rose among three thorns :) We are very excited & really didn't have a preference this time around about the sex of the baby. Now, if I can get through the summer being pregnant, we'll be just fine! This will be my first summer pregnancy.

Peace,
munchesmom

Advent Happenings

The Christmas shopping is just about done & most of the presents are wrapped. The cards are sitting on the kitchen table just about ready to be mailed. (I just realized that I bought twice as many stamps as I needed. For some reason I was thinking they came in books of 10 not 20.) The house is simply decorated this year. We put up a smaller tree & just had the kids put their ornaments on this year. It looks really nice. My handpainted village is on top of the piano & the snowmen take up the bookshelves in the family room & the stove backing in the kitchen. Now to clean & get ready for Casinodad's dad who is coming to visit us for a few days next week. We are also hosting Christmas dinner here w/ his family.

In addition to the normal hustle & bustle of the Christmas Season, we've just finished up a round of colds in our household! It started w/ The Archangel & The Princess, then The Prophet & I got it, & finally Casinodad is just getting over his. It took a total of almost two weeks to go around completely. I knew that I was bound to end up w/ it after many sleepless nights w/ the muchkins & also cuddling w/ them. They've really had cabin fever between being sick & it being so cold here. We had a great snow a few weeks ago (about 4 inches) but they were unable to go play because they were sick. I'm just thankful that we got the colds out of the way before Christmas this year. We've missed many things in the past years because of being sick the week of Christmas.

So, I go from a cold straight into the morning sickness phase. Yes, I am pregnant w/ #4. I took a home pregnancy test the first Sunday of Advent, right before church. What could be better that starting out Advent w/ the expectation of another blessed miracle to come! A couple months ago, Casinodad looked at me & said that he was thinking about another one. I said that I was also. After much prayer, thought, & discussion, we decided to give it a go. Our baby is due Aug. 9 - the same weeked as our family reunion! I had pregnancy induced hypertension w/ all three of the munchkins & had to be induced early each time (2 weeks w/ the boys & 3 weeks w/ the Princess). So, most likely that will happen again. It does make it kind of nice since I don't have to wonder if it's time to go to the hospital. Although the induced contractions can be quite painful!

So far, I'm feeling pretty well - just very tired. It doesn't help that the past three weeks I've been working until at least 11pm at Target & we've all been sick. My tummy doesn't feel upset at the moment, but of course it is still early.

Have a truly blessed Christmas & a wonderful New Year!
Peace, munchesmom
