Kids Say the Darndest Things

As I mentioned in the last installment of "Kids Say the Darndest Things," The Princess will sometimes have bad dreams & be in that not-quite-awake stage. A few months ago, I decided that, in addition to our family nighttime prayers, I would say a special one for her once she's in her bed. We list cheerful things & may vary it a bit, but this is the gist of it:

"Dear Heavenly Father, Please watch over (The Princess) as she sleeps tonight. Give her sweet dreams of rainbows & sunshine, lollipops & roses, lilacs & lavender, princesses & castles, fairies & unicorns, Mary & all the angels & Saints in Heaven, & all about God! Amen."

The Saint, now that he is sleeping w/ her in her bed, will pipe in at various words...usually the ones he thinks are fun to say. So, with a big smile on his face, he'll say, "ca-als" (castles), "cor" (unicorns), "May-ee" (Mary), & "Dod" (God).

Kids Say the Darndest Things

NOTE: Just to let my readers know...after today, I'm going to take a couple weeks off for a computer break. I need to replenish my spiritual well & reconnect w/ my family. Please keep us in our prayers & I'll "see" you when I return!

Every once in a while, The Princess will get up in the middle of the night, not quite awake. She'll pace around her room, whimpering & crying. Since The Saint sleeps in her room, I usually rush in there & take her to my room until she's calmed down. I know she's calm when I ask who she is & who I am. If she answers correctly, I lead her back to bed & she's good for the rest of the night.

The other night, she had one of these little episodes. When I asked who she was, she answered correctly. However, when I asked who I was, she said (w/out pause), "Spiderman!" I'm guessing she had a dream about Spiderman since the munchkins had watched one of the movies earlier in the day.

Kids Say the Darndest Things

The other night, my best friend's husband came over to take a look at our van. I had already changed into my PJ's, so I went to put my other clothes back on before he arrived. The Princess was upstairs w/ me & was wondering why she & her brothers didn't have to change back into their day clothes. I told her it was one thing for adults to see kids in their jammies, but it was another story for adults to see each other in theirs. Her response, "We're not a story, we're just plain people!"

Kids Say the Darndest Things

This week, instead of "Kids Say the Darndest Things," I think I am going to use "Moms Say the Darndest Things to Kids!" I've recently found myself saying some things that I never would have thought I'd say. (If you follow me on Facebook, I apologize for the repeat of these sayings!)

To The Saint, as he was sprinkling his sippy cup water on the living room pillows: "The pillows are not flowers, so please don't water them!"
AND
Also to The Saint, as he was putting my cell phone in a tub of soapy water at my friend's house: "No, thank you, my cell phone does not need a bath!"

The Archangel had always loved playing the classic Cootie game that my parents had at their house. So, for Christmas in 2006, a few months before he turned 4, my parents got him his own game. He was so excited. "Now I have Cooties like Grandma!"

The Saint has been broadening his vocabulary in the past couple months, so today I think I'll share some of his versions of various words.
*************************
Dadden = Daddy
nack = snack
dih dit = cheese stick
lid-dah-lih = Legos
Doh-ra = Dora the Explorer
Helloh = Hello
Dute = Duke (the dog that lives behind us)
***************
dat-dats = nunchuck (for the Wii controller - Yesterday he came up to Dadden, saying that & pointing to the end of the Wii controller. It took a bit, but once we said nunchuck, he smiled & ran to the shelf.)
***************
Whenever we tell him that we love him, he says, "Ooo too!"
*************************
I'm sure there are many more that he says & many more cute things that he will say, so I guess you'll just have to stay tuned for more of The Saint sayings!

When we were visiting my parents last weekend, my mom was flipping through the kids' TV stations to find something for all nine of her grandkids to watch. She stopped at one & The Princess said she couldn't watch that show. (I don't remember what it was.) When my mom asked why, The Princess said, "Because it will affect me."

Oops! I goofed slightly last week. I should have included The Prophet for the Hail Mary comment, too. I forgot that he also said "Play with us sinners." Maybe it was something in the way we were teaching the boys...

Here's another from The Prophet:
When he was five years old, he was sitting at the table w/ a baked potato. He took his fork & put it into one end of the potato, held it up, & said, "Look, it's a punch lifter." After a few seconds, I realized that he meant it was a punch "ladle."

WOW! This has been a busy week. I've not posted anything since last Friday. Hopefully I'll be back on track next week.

Here's my post for Mystical Rose Design's weekly Blog Hop. Click the above link if you'd like to see more.

We started saying prayers w/ the munchkins from the very beginning. Even when they were just infants, I would rock them at night & say prayers out loud for them. The Saint knows exactly what to do & as soon as we sit in the rocker, he puts his hands together & says, "A-NAN," (his version of "AMEN.") We're working on the Sign of the Cross w/ him, but for some reason he can't past his forehead. He just keeps hitting it w/ the palm of his hand.

Once The Archangel started saying them w/ us, it was always cute to hear his words for the prayers. For example, when we got to the Hail Mary, instead of saying "pray for us sinners" he would say "play with us sinners."

The Archangel has had a little trouble understanding figures of speech lately & taking them quite literally.

For example - We were having an issue w/ him not treating his siblings very well. We talked to him about being nice in return, even if they were not being nice to him. We used the phrase, "Killing them with kindness." His response: "Does that mean you put love in your hand & punch them?"

Also - When we went to the zoo last week, I told the munchkins that Lawgirl was going to "tag along" with us. He said, "That means she would run towards us & tag us to come along w/ us."

Perhaps I should add some figures of speech to his school lessons...

Kids Say the Darndest Things Fridays!

Join Us for Kids say the Darndest things

A couple weeks ago, Lucy at Mystical Rose Design invited me to join this new meme of hers. I don't think you need any explanation as to what this meme will be about, do you? What a great idea &, w/ four munchkins, I have plenty of quips & quotes from them! So here goes my first installation of...

"KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS FRIDAYS!"

A couple Sundays ago, The Princess was keeping me company while I was getting dressed for church. As I pulled on my panty hose, she noticed the big hole at the top & asked me about it. I told her that I snagged them the first time I wore them, but, because it was at the top, it would be covered by my clothes. Innocently, batting her beautiful brown eyes, she responded, "I know what happened, Mommy. Your bottom is too big!"
