A Letter from HandyGramps to Homeschooling Families (& all Families, for that Matter)

To Home-Schooling Parents (and Others to Whom This May Well
Matter),
No doubt most of you have by now heard of the plight of the
Romeike family – Uwe & Hannelore and their six children. They came to the United States from Germany where
home-schooling is illegal and were given asylum in Tennessee.
The reason they left is that they felt that the curriculum in German
schools was counter to their faith and civic values, and that any attempt at
home-schooling would result in fines, imprisonment, and even loss of custody of
their children. Now, U.S. Attorney
General Eric Holder is trying to deport them to Germany, claiming that their rights
were not violated by German law. To help
the Romeike family to remain here to home-school as they see fit, consider signing a petition to the White House – if you have not
already done so. Now, I ask you to consider
the serious implications of Holder’s intent.
If the courts grant Holder’s request, that would mean that
the courts support his fundamental belief in the intrusion of government in the
education of our children. As a member
of the massive Obama political machine, Holder is by all definitions a
socialist. That means simply and
matter-of-factly that along with the president and the other liberals in the
administration, he wants full power over our rights, asserting that such power
should belong to the government. In
short, to them, the government knows best how we should conduct all aspects of our
lives. This is evident in practically
every aspect of the current administration – Obamacare, over 50 “czars” who are
accountable to no one but Obama, the bailouts, the stimuluses, the excessive
number of executive orders that bypass Congress, and particularly in Obama’s
repeated bashing of the Constitution of
the United States as an obsolete relic of an earlier age. If this is allowed to continue it would mean
the ultimate destruction of our basic two-party system, a system wisely crafted
by our Founding Fathers to ensure that citizens’ rights – including the right
to home-school – are fully protected by a minimal government.
Add to that the administration’s attempts to silence the
conservative news media under the so-called “Fairness Doctrine”, a bold and
arrogant violation of the 1st Amendment, and the current attempts at
re-interpreting the 2nd Amendment regarding gun rights. It’s all about power, not governance.
There has already been talk in Washington and in some states about banning
home-schooling. Considering the
political bent of the Obama administration, that means nothing more than their
intent to fully indoctrinate our children with a liberal mindset by controlling
the curriculum (vis-à-vis Germany). The “politically correct” changes in our
schools have already begun the process.
History has been watered down, depriving our children of a full
understanding of how our great nation was shaped. No longer are our children taught how the
Church has formed a great part of history (for good and bad at times, in all
honesty). God and patriotism have been
removed from the classroom because someone might be offended (never mind that WE
are offended by not being allowed to pray or to say the Pledge of Allegiance). The right to fail has been taken away “because
it damages our self-esteem” (we learn so much from our failures – that is such
a basic part of our education). Our
children are told what they can and cannot eat.
The list goes on.
It does not matter whether you are a Democrat, Independent,
or a Republican. All of us are going to
be adversely affected by a decision to deport the Romeike family, because it
will set the stage for ever more intrusion of this administration into our
lives, beginning with the potential demise of home-schooling and the political
indoctrination of our children.
This, my friends, is my opinion. If you choose to agree with it, great. If not, well, I’ve had my say. I can only hope and pray that the future will
brighten so that our children can live in a country in which the freedom on
which it was founded is upheld by a just and compassionate – and smaller – government,
a government so well-designed by those who struggled and gave their lives over
200 years ago to free themselves from the tyranny of their former rulers.
With great regard and a plea for sanity, I remain…
Sincerely yours,
Handygramps
