My Favorite Christian Authors

smkelly8 at Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander wrote a post on her blog of her favorite Christian authors. All of hers were fiction. It got me thinking about some of the authors who have shaped my life. I've included mine below...fiction & non-fiction.

1) Jan Karon - I LOVE her style of writing & indepth story of Fr. Tim Kavanaugh, an Episcopalian priest in the Mitford Series. She draws you into all the characters' lives & I really felt like they were close friends of mine.

2) Katherine Valentine - She is a Catholic author who writes in a style similar to Jan Karon's. In fact, one of her characters, an old retired priest was found reading the first of the Mitford Series - At Home in Mitford. Her Dorsetville series centers around a Catholic priest in the small town of Dorsetville & his fight to save his parish.

3) Lori Wick - She writes both contemporary fiction & period novels...all of the ones I've read are very good.

4) Karen Kingsbury - Many of her books focus on forgiveness of others & of self.

5) G.K. Chesterton - I haven't officially read one of his books, but I've read several about him & I love his story & the many quotes of his. He had a brilliant (while a bit scatter-brained!) mind & wrote w/ such common sense ideas...many of which apply over 100 years later in today's society. In fact, one of the books I read about him is The Apostle of Common Sense by Dale Ahlquist. Casinodad bought me his autobiography for Christmas, so I am looking forward to reading it soon.

6) Max Lucado - I read some of his books when I was going through a rough time in my faith walk. While he is not a Catholic author, I found a lot of good, spiritual inspiration from his books. One of my favorites is On the Anvil.

7) C.S. Lewis - I haven't read any of his non-fiction (yet), but I loved The Chronicles of Narnia. Believe it or not, I read the first two books when I was in five grade, read the first one a couple more times over the years, but didn't read the rest until just a few years ago. My favorite two are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader & The Last Battle.

I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them at the moment. There are so many books & authors I'd love to read, but there is so little time.

I've enjoyed your list and will add some of these to my (long) reading list. I suggest people read "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis. It offers a practical, well thought out way to talk about faith with nonbelievers.

Any Chicago readers, I just learned of a lunch time book group on Catholic novelists on Tuesdays at St. Peter's in the Loop on Madison at 12:05.

Authors of Catholic literature for adults:
Michael O'brien. Try "Father Elijah" you'll stay up all night.
Louis de Wohl, Brilliant novelist on the lives of several saints.
Henryk Sienkiewicz. Quo Vadis. Life changing.

Non fiction:
Peter Kreeft. Hands down favourite. Try Socrates meets Jesus if you are new to the Kreeft scene.
Mark Shea. Particularly good for converts, great charity, amazing ability to explain tenets of the faith. Easy to digest for busy moms. First recommendation would be "By What Authority."
Van Zeller. "Holiness for Housewives and other Working Women."

For teens, but great read for moms, fiction based on fairy tales by Regina Doman, start with "Shadow of the Bear." Weaves a great tale, works chastity and courtship for young people seamlessly into her plot. Beautiful. Parents probably should read them first, to discern what age their child is ready. She also has a beautiful book on the growth of baby in the womb for little people called "Angel in the Waters."

This list has no end but I have to stop somewhere. Last pick for a childrens book..."New Catholic Picture Bible." Father Lovasik

Thanks for asking, love to share books!
